Mossberg 22 LR US Property 44 Production Numbers, Dates & Contract Numbers

Thanks to Hagar for the following Info!

Mossberg Firearms models and years manufactured. Field Model 12, 20 or 419 bore. 410 with 24 inch barrel. 12 and 20 with 20, 22, 24,26, 28 30 inch barrels with assorted chokes, receiver safety. E-mail email protected and Mossberg Customer Service will reply with the year of manufacture in a few days. They will not look it up by phone call. However, CS has previously dated serial #J046254 as manufactured in 1983. A reasonable guess by me would be that #L733001 that you want to buy was made about 1985-1988. Once you have a serial #, if you e-mail it to Mossberg they will usually get you a year that it was manufactured. They had a recall on a their Bolt Action 12GA, probably 10 years ago now, and it was from serial# xxx to serial # yyy. Mossberg serial numbers are typically 7-characters. The best way to find the age of a Mossberg 500A Shotgun is simply to call the company's customer service line and have the serial number.

Model 185 shotguns were manufactured from 1947 to 1964, so most - if not all - do not have serial numbers as those were not mandated until 1968. All 185D variants were distributed with three choke tubes (IC, M, and F sizes) which, unlike more modern shotgun choke tubes, mounted by screwing to the outside of the barrel. I'm looking for the advice of someone more knowledgeable or more patient than I or more than likely someone who is both more knowledgeable and patient. I am trying to figure out the year my Mossberg 500 was made. I believe it was mid 1970's but not 100% sure. The serial number is C47508.

Speculation on Drilled and Tapped Receivers

The theory is that some M44US receivers were drilled and tapped for scope mounting even though the Government contracts never called for them. Also some rifles that were drilled and tapped were marked M44US and some were marked M44US(a). Although the rifles marked M44US(a) do not have all of the civilian features, mainly the adjustable trigger. The guess on the serial number range on the drilled and tapped receivers are ~140,000-144,000. This means that roughly 4,000 rifles were produced with the drilled and tapped receivers.
